Chiefs TE Travis Kelce 'extremely grateful' for new deal

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce wanted more money but was not interested in executing a leverage play as a means to get it.Kelce, as it turns out, got what he wanted as the Chiefs reworked his contract, pumping up his salary to $34.25 million over the next two seasons. The $17.125 million per year represents the highest average annual salary among all NFL tight ends."I'm not a guy that sits out," Kelce said on the "New Heights" podcast with his brother, Jason. "I'm not a guy that holds out. I'm a guy that loves coming into the building, and the Chiefs know that. So, for them to want to get this done for me knowing how much blood, sweat and tears that I put into this thing, I'm extremely grateful."Kelce, 34, was in line to earn $12 million in 2024 and $16.25 million in 2025 prior to the deal."I'm so excited and so thankful to this organization for getting it done, making me feel appreciated and compensated the right way, and on top of that I got to move the needle for the tight end room," Kelce said. "It's everyone else's job to keep making that tight end AAV (average annual value) go up and up with every single contract that's better than mine in the future."I'm so fricking thankful to (general manager) Brett Veach, (president) Mark Donovan, Coach (Andy) Reid -- Big Red, I love you, big guy -- and obviously (team owner) Clark Hunt. The Hunt family has been unbelievable to not only myself and this Kansas City community, but they've just been so generous since I've been here in making it feel like home. For the past (11) years I've been able to make this place exactly that and I've loved every single second of it and I'm going to love the next two years playing here in Kansas City and we'll see what happens after that."

Chiefs: Speedster WR worthy of early draft pick

Chiefs: Speedster WR worthy of early draft pick

Xavier Worthy might not win a weigh-in, but the first-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs was highly rated by the front office because of his playmaking skills, speed and production at Texas.A wide receiver with the Longhorns, Worthy reeled in 26 receiving touchdowns in three seasons before blazing a 4.21-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. At 165 pounds, Worthy's weight isn't a worry to the Chiefs because of the toughness he showed on the field at Texas."You're asking the wrong guy about weight," Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said of the 28th overall pick in the draft. "I think he's fine where he's at. I don't think that's a problem. He's playing at a high level, and he's been doing this since he was a freshman. I'm not too worried about the weight."Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said Worthy, 20, still is growing and plans to connect with the team nutritionist to be in full alignment with Kansas City's plan to bulk him up, if only slightly."We'll have him with our dietitian and our weight staff. We're not going to make him 200 pounds," Veach joked, "but also keep him at the 175-180 mark I think will be a healthy weight for him. It will all make sense ... all these (draft picks) are going to have to get bigger and stronger just from the marathon of the season, just to survive more games."Reid said Worthy would be used as a receiver and returner as a rookie. He'll join a WR corps that added Hollywood Brown and expects to have Rashee Rice back for a second season after he led the team in receptions as a rookie.

Chiefs, Royals ponder future after voters reject stadium tax

The Chiefs and Royals are questioning their futures in Kansas City after voters rejected the extension of a sales tax that the teams said would have assured they remain in the area.Voters in Jackson County, Mo., voted no Tuesday on the ballot measure that would have kept a three-eights-cent sales tax for stadium financing in place for the next 40 years. The measure failed 58.1 percent to 41.9 percent. The two teams have played at the Truman Sports Complex for more than 50 years -- the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972 and the Royals at Kauffman Stadium since 1973. The Royals want to build a new downtown stadium, and the Chiefs want to make extensive renovations at Arrowhead."We respect the democratic process, we respect the voters of Jackson County and the results of the election," John Sherman, the Royals' owner, said Tuesday night. "We're deeply disappointed, as we are steadfast in our belief that Jackson County is far better off with the Chiefs and the Royals. This is a belief I both hold professionally and personally, as someone whose roots run deep in this town."We will take some time to reflect on and process the outcome and find a path forward that works for the Royals and our fans."Approval of the sales tax extension would have helped fund both a new Royals stadium and the Arrowhead improvements.Sherman has said ownership of the Royals would contribute at least $1 billion to replace Kauffman, the sixth-oldest stadium in baseball. Clark Hunt, owner of the Chiefs, pledged $300 million toward $800 million for upgrades at Arrowhead, the third-oldest in the NFL."We're disappointed," Chiefs team president Mark Donovan said. "We feel we put forth the best offer for Jackson County. We were ready to extend the longstanding partnership the teams have enjoyed with this county."We will do, and look to do, what is in the best interest of our fans and our organization as we move forward."A variety of community groups in Kansas City had come out against the proposal, saying the burden was too high on taxpayers and ownership needed to do more.
