ABOUT “Borrowed Future: How Student Loans Are Killing The American Dream” documentary:
THE Student loan debt has become the norm with 45 million Americans currently in debt because of their education. We assume it’s what we have to do to get to realize the American Dream. But how did we get here? Borrowed Future uncovers the dark side of the student loan industry and exposes how the system was built to work against us.

Tracing the origin of the student loan program back to the U.S. Treasury in the late 1950s, Borrowed Future explains how, as demand for higher education grew, so did tuition. The student loan program started with good intentions–to help Americans increase their opportunities. But ultimately, government-sponsored programs became a giant, privatized, for-profit industry.

These corporations have figured out how keep student borrowers in debt. By law, it’s almost impossible for student loans to be dismissed through bankruptcy. That’s led to growing default rates, a record amount of accumulated interest, and never-ending repayment plans.

To make matters worse, most teens who take out student loans for their education don’t know what they’ve signed up for until it’s too late. Instead of living the life they imagined, they end up just trying to survive after graduation because of student loan payments.

Borrowed Future tells the story of the student loan crisis through the lens of industry insiders and those outside–college graduates owing between $9,000 and $1 million in student loans, a college graduate without debt, and high schoolers who haven’t questioned the norm of student loans.

The good news is, you have the power to beat the student loan system, but it’s up to you. Are you going to feed the system or fight back?
